Investigation continues into OWU student’s death

Police are still trying to piece together the series of events that led to an Ohio Wesleyan University student’s death over the weekend.

Delaware Police Capt. Adam Moore said Monday that police are looking to speak to anyone who saw Luke Anthony Gabbert, 19, Friday night.

“We are still trying to piece together his whereabouts,” Moore said. Moore said anyone with information about Gabbert can contact the police at 740-203-1111.

Gabbert, a Lewis Center resident and graduate of Olentangy Orange High School, was found dead Saturday at 10:24 a.m. by a man out for a walk in the area of Delaware Run creek off South Franklin Street.

An autopsy was completed by the Franklin County Coroner’s Office over the weekend.

A summary of the autopsy provided by the Delaware County Coroner’s Office said the preliminary cause of death had not been determined.

The report states there were no fatal traumatic injuries found by forensic pathologists and the coroner’s office is awaiting toxicology results before they conclude a cause and manner of death.

Moore said there have been indications that alcohol may have been involved. Moore added that the coroner’s office would be doing more forensic examinations while they await toxicology results, which could take weeks.

Gabbert was a freshmen at OWU and played on the soccer team. Gabbert was also reportedly a new pledge at the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity.

Ohio Wesleyan University President Rock Jones said in a statement Sunday that there has been no indication of foul play.

Services for Gabbert are being conducted by Schoedinger Funeral Service.

OWU’s student newspaper, The Transcript, said an informal service was held on The Hill Saturday afternoon. White paper bags to write memories on and votive candles were provided to students. The Transcript added OWU’s chaplain office and counseling services were available for students Sunday.

The investigation is ongoing, police said Monday.
