Several road projects are expected to be completed this fall as scheduled, Delaware County commissioners were told at their meeting on Monday.
Chief deputy engineer Robert Riley made the announcement prior to the commissioners approving a contract for phase one of the Powell Road project.
The George Igel Co. had the lowest of five bids on the Powell Road project at $1,794,829.45, which was below the engineer’s estimate, Riley said. The project will widen Powell Road at Bale Kenyon Road.
He said Igel is also doing work on the $5.2 million Worthington Road project, which will widen the road to four lanes from Powell Road to Africa Road, and replace the bridge over Alum Creek.
“Conveniently, they’re doing work only a few hundred feet away,” Riley said of Igel.
The Powell and Worthington road projects are among the three projects that will have an impact on Gemini Place. The $10 million Gemini Place extension will place 3/4 mile of five-lane roadway from Orion Place through the former Polaris Amphitheater, plus realignments of Powell and Worthington roads (requiring a month closure this summer).
When asked for a timeline, Riley said all three Gemini projects should be completed in October.
Another project, the long-awaited extension of Sawmill Parkway, also appears to be headed towards an October completion date. The latest on the $30 million project is the commissioners approved the removal of FirstEnergy power lines that are in the path of the extension between Bunty Station Road and U.S. 42.
According to an overview on the county’s engineer’s office website: “The Sawmill Parkway Extension will construct 5½ miles of 4-lane divided roadway between Hyatts Road and Section Line Road near the City of Delaware, Ohio. Phases A-F includes a 4½ miles section of new road between Hyatts and U.S. 42 with 4 new roundabouts at Clark Shaw Road, Bean Oller Road, Ford Road and Bunty Station, as well as a signalized intersection at U.S. 42, scheduled for construction in 2015-16. Phase G includes the remaining 1 mile section west to Section Line Road, which is still under development.”
Clark Shaw and Ford roads will close for two months this summer, and Bean Oller and Bunty Station roads will close for two months this summer/fall for the roundabout construction.
A related project, the Powell Road and Sawmill Parkway reconstruction, is also scheduled to be completed in October. The $225,000 project will widen Powell Road from the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium to Old Sawmill Road, including additional turn lanes on Sawmill Parkway.
