Liberty Community Center celebrated milestones with a crowd of nearly 60 people at the William Street United Methodist Church on Feb. 27.
An evening with desserts, along with alumni stories of how the early childhood center has made a difference in the lives of children, made up the evening titled “Our Heart Belongs to LCC.”
Joann Manning, foster parent of several children who had attended the center, was the guest speaker. She shared with the audience several examples of the program’s importance and said that the children got a keen start after receiving care and education at LCC. “This program is truly a pillar in the community,” she said.
Ann Teague, director of the center, shared the program’s achievements for 2015 and thanked partnerships established in the community. Foremost, the United Way of Delaware County has seen merit in the program and has consistently championed for children through the programs offered at the center. The Liberty 4 Kids program allows children access to early childhood education through financial support given to parents who are working but unable to maintain the cost of childcare. In addition, the diaper pantry continues to have an impact, distributing nearly 16,500 diapers to families in need.
As a result of a collaboration with the Hunger Alliance, the center will offer the “Munch-E-Back Pack” program, providing breakfast, lunch and dinner and a snack on Saturdays and Sundays to children on free or subsidized lunches.
Most recently the center has collaborated with Family Promise and Delaware County courts to provide care for homeless children or those who are in the foster care system.
The program closed with children from the center singing for the audience.
Following the celebration, the board of directors met for its annual meeting and election of officers. The officers for 2016 include: Tommy Thompson, president; Randy Applegate, vice president; Susan Munday, treasurer; and Brooke Decker, secretary.
The nonprofit center relies on donations and grants. Financial contributions may be made to Liberty Community Center, 207 London Road, Delaware OH 43015. Childcare inquiries can be made by calling 740-369-3876.
