Big Walnut High students dismissed after bomb threat

Bomb detection dogs were brought in to investigate at Big Walnut High School Monday afternoon after a bomb threat was made at the school.

Students were dismissed early Monday.

Officials from the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office said Monday afternoon that they were assisting Sunbury police after they were notified at about 1:30 p.m. that a bomb threat had been made at Big Walnut High School.

Officials said the threat mentioned several bombs and the parking lot. Superintendent Angie Pollock also said that a note was found at the high school mentioning potential bombs.

Officials from Big Walnut Local Schools posted on social media that students who ride buses and walk home at Big Walnut High School would be dismissed early but students who drive would need to wait until police had cleared the parking lot.

Sheriff’s officials said they searched the parking lot and found no threats. Students who drove were then dismissed as well.

“The Delaware County Sheriff’s Office, local police, the fire department and personnel from the U.S. Marshals office are here,” Pollock said Monday afternoon during a phone call while the high school was being searched. “A couple of years ago, we might have reacted differently but, in today’s world, we have to err on the side of caution, and law enforcement is helping us with that.”

At 4 p.m. Pollock said the high school had been cleared a second time to allow the fire marshal and law enforcement to do a second sweep of the building.

After-school events at the high school and neighboring Big Walnut Intermediate School were canceled for Monday.

“We appreciate the patience and understanding of our students and members of the community during this situation,” Pollock said. “Our top priority is always to protect our students. We appreciate their good behavior while waiting for buses, allowing us and law enforcement to address the situation at hand.”

Officials said bomb dogs from the Columbus Fire Department were brought in to investigate.
