The Big Walnut boys tennis team made sure it didn’t stand out in the cold for nothing, sweeping away visiting Jonathan Alder in its season opener Monday in Sunbury.

Juniors Jared Deel, Nick Schulz and D.J. Werner picked up the Golden Eagles’ singles wins. Deel rallied for a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 win at first singles, Schulz handled his opponent at second singles by a 6-4, 6-2 margin and Werner notched a solid 6-2, 6-1 win at third singles.

In doubles action, Stephen Pushkin and Grant Bartlett teamed up to secure a 6-1, 6-0 win at first doubles while Lane Davis and Hunter Rankin won 6-1, 7-6 at second singles.

Big Walnut (1-0) returns to action today against host Olentangy.

BASEBALL

Hits proved hard to come by on a cold and windy Monday afternoon in Granville as Delaware Christian managed just three in a 9-5 season-opening setback at the hands of host Granville Christian.

The Lions struck first, racing out to a 2-0 lead after one. They added a run in the third before the Eagles answered with a two-run fourth to get back into things.

The momentum didn’t stay on DCS’ side long, though, as Granville Christian posted a five spot in the bottom half to break things open.

The Lions added another run in the sixth while the Eagles plated three in the seventh to smooth out the scoring summary.

Isaac Rindfuss led DCS (0-1) at the plate with a triple and two RBI. Ryan Manny, who had a double, scored a run and drove in another in the setback.

The Eagles are slated to return to action today against host Shekinah Christian. First pitch is set for 5:30 p.m.

SOFTBALL

Granville Christian 16, Delaware Christian 1, 5 innings.
