Health officials urge Zika precautions

0

With spring temperatures becoming warmer, Delaware General Health District officials say they are encouraging residents to take precautions against mosquitoes, especially for people returning from Zika-affected areas.

They say that the health district is starting to see people returning from Zika-affected areas who have Zika-like symptoms. Some people have been tested for Zika virus and to date, officials said, no one from Delaware County has tested positive for the disease.

Residents are encouraged to take mosquito precautions, such as wearing mosquito repellent, wearing long sleeves and long pants while outdoors, taking extra care during peak mosquito activity hours (dusk to dawn) and eliminating mosquito breeding sites like standing water pools.

If a resident tests positive for Zika virus, health officials say they will take appropriate prevention/control measures, which may include mosquito fogging and applying larvacide where appropriate to interrupt mosquito breeding, and doing a targeted information campaign to increase prevention efforts and knowledge among communities.
