Youth summer jobs program upgraded to year-round

This will be the last summer for the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families summer employment program for youth that runs from May to August, according to David Dombrosky, director of Delaware County Job and Family Services.

It’s to be replaced by the Comprehensive Case Management Employment Program, providing jobs year-round for youth 16 to 24 years old.

Dombrosky informed county commissioners about the change Thursday. “This will be the last year for the summer youth program,” he said. “The TANF summer youth employment program is time-limited. All the funds being used to run that program will now be redirected to the CCME program.”

Commissioners appointed the county Department of Job and Family Services to be the lead agency for administering the program.

The CCME program was created by House Bill 64 and signed into law by Gov. John Kasich last June.

Youth interested in employment through the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families can still contact the Department of Job and Family Services at 140 N. Sandusky St., or 740-833-2300.

In other business, county commissioners voted to replace a previously passed resolution to correct an error for the financing of the county’s new judicial center on North Sandusky.

The new resolution updated the terms of the $34 million in bonds issued to pay for the new county judicial center which is now under construction. “We’re just updating the bond terms to 30 years,” said Si Kille, assistant county administrator. The resolution passed April 7 was for 20 years.

The county’s bond counsel discovered the mistake, Kille told The Gazette. The bond terms were always to be for 30 years, he said.

The $34 million in bonds were issued to pay for the planned five-story courthouse building. The new building will feature plazas between the Hayes Building and the main entrance, and will have two levels of underground parking, with the lowest level for staff and the public and the second-level parking for staff and separate in-custody defendant delivery. The third story will house the Clerk of Courts Office, grand jury space, adult court services and public parking. The fourth and fifth stories will house courtrooms, hearing and mediation spaces. There will be in-custody defendant holding areas on all five stories for security purposes.
