After both teams had multiple chances to score and couldn’t in what was a 1-1 10-inning marathon suspended by darkness Friday in Sunbury, Orange finally broke through when the game resumed Tuesday afternoon.

With things still even heading into the 13th, the Pioneers (20-3) plated eight runs to run away with a 9-1 13-inning win — their 13th straight victory of the season.

“We played 10 complete Friday, and both teams had the bases loaded with less than two out multiple times, but the pitchers came through,” Orange coach Phil Callaghan said.

Tuesday, it was the hitters’ turn.

The 13th inning started innocently enough when Orange’s Logan Moss reached after his grounder took a big hop over the first baseman’s head. Zach Stiteler followed with a two-hopper over the pitcher’s head and Matt Poole reached when Big Walnut failed to cover his sacrifice bunt attempt.

Garrett O’Reilly then singled to right center to bring home what proved to be the game-winning run.

Colin Shepherd, who picked up the win thanks to five shutout innings of relief, had the biggest hit of the inning — a bases-clearing double to make it a 5-1 game.

Moss and Stiteler collected their second hits of the inning shortly after as the Pioneers batted around while Jason Schutte also had a hit in frame.

Jake Watson pitched eight strong innings before Shepherd went to work. Austin Becker, who came on in relief for Big Walnut, was charged with the loss. Henry von Hollen got the start for the Eagles, pitching into the seventh.

SOFTBALL

Madi Huck, Audrey Hannahs and Caylin Morstadt combined for a no-hitter as the Hayes softball team blanked visiting Franklin Heights 10-0 in five innings Tuesday in Delaware.

Huck tossed the first three frames, striking out six while walking just one. Hannahs pitched the next inning and a third before Morstadt came on to record the final two outs of the game.

The Pacer offense, led by Amaia Daniel’s 2-for-4 performance which included a double, homer and three RBI, plated four runs in the first, two more in the second, three in the third and one in the fourth.

Lexi Mattix was also solid, finishing a perfect 3-for-3 while Hannahs, Kaily Schuette and Leah Milligan had two hits apiece.

Liberty 7, Dublin Coffman 5

The Patriots erupted for five runs in the sixth en route to a solid OCC-Central Division win over the visiting Shamrocks Tuesday in Powell.

Arica Flaugher hit a solo homer in the second to break the scoring seal before Liberty added another run in the third.

Coffman took the lead with a three-run fourth and added a single tally in the fifth to take a brief 4-2 lead before the Patriots took control with the big inning.

Katelyn Wilhelm picked up the win in the circle.
