The Delaware Hayes baseball team found hits hard to come by in Monday’s Division I district tournament opener, falling to host New Albany 6-0 to see its season come to an end.
The Eagles, who the Pacers (9-17) slipped past 6-5 when the two teams last met back in April, were determined to make sure that didn’t happen again. They plated a pair of runs in the first inning and never looked back, adding two more in the third and single tallies in the fourth and sixth.
Hayes, meanwhile, managed next to nothing off New Albany starting and winning pitcher Nate Kriss. Gabe Phillips singled to right field in the second at-bat of the game, but the Pacers only managed one baserunner the rest of the way.
Kriss struck out 14 en route to the complete-game shutout.
Hayes’ Tyler Brown took the loss, allowing six runs (four earned) on eight hits while walking four in 5.1 innings of action.
Mason J. Davis secured the final two outs of the sixth in relief.
Next up, the 22nd-seeded Eagles will travel to Pickerington to take on ninth seeded Pickerington Central in Wednesday’s second round. First pitch is slated for 5 p.m.
