Appliance pickup service for seniors underway

The “Senior Appliance Pickup” service is again available to senior citizens looking to rid themselves of any old appliances, televisions and computer equipment, according to the Delaware General Health District.

Appliances will be collected through the end of May and will start again in September until funding is depleted, officials said.

This health district’s “Keep Delaware County Beautiful” program is entering its 12th year and is funded by SourcePoint. The service is free and available to all Delaware County senior citizens.

The pickup service was developed to prevent injuries that could be sustained from lifting or falling while trying to move appliances or computer components, officials said. The health district contracts with a moving company to pick up large, bulky or heavy items from a resident’s home and deliver them to Sims Recycling.

This service also allows for many of the materials to be recycled rather than go directly to a landfill, they said.

In 2015, 85 senior households had 33 appliances, 30 computers/systems and 93 televisions picked up.
