Students help donate to memorial

Orange Middle School students participated Friday morning in the schools inaugural Honor Walk to raise funds for the benefit of the planned Orange Township Veteran’s Memorial and Honor Flight.

“Students have raised $9,250,” said Kristen Marconi, social studies teacher. “And it’s still coming.”

The memorial is to be constructed on the corner of Orange Road and Old State Road in front of the old township hall sometime in 2017,” said Amanda Sheterom, spokesperson for Orange Township. “The construction will be done in phases,” she said. “The estimated cost is just shy of $400,00.”

Sheterom said Orange High School student Amelia Dewey’s design themed “Heroes Not Forgotten” was chosen in 2013 for the memorial.

Throughout the day students spent their social studies period walking down to the old Orange Township Hall to get a Krispy Kream doughnut and then back to the school’s track to walk another mile.

The students have been studying about veterans in social studies this year. “Each grade level is doing something different,” Marconi said. “In the 8th grade, we’re studying veterans’ issues through political cartoons.”

According to Marconi, students were encouraged to bring a $5 donation to walk a mile in honor of a veteran or an active military service member in their lives. They were encouraged to have family and friends sponsor them on the walk.

“It’s humbling that they’re wanting to give back to the community,” Sheterom said.

According to Honor Flight’s website, its mission is to honor the nation’s senior veterans with trips to Washington D.C., to visit their war memorials at no cost to them. The hope is that veterans will share their personal stories with future generations.
