The Delaware Hayes wrestling team may be young, but that didn’t hurt it any during Thursday’s league dual against visiting Dublin Jerome.
The Pacers had six freshmen in the starting lineup, three winning with pins to spark a fast start the team parlayed into a 54-20 win.
“Our freshmen are many and they’re all hard workers … with great attitudes and eager to learn,” Hayes coach Josh Heffernan said.
Brystin Coldiron (106) and Tristan Burton (113), both freshmen, set the tone. Coldiron pinned Jerome’s Jack Viola with four seconds left in the first period before Burton took care of Craigen Lenker with a first-period pin to stake the Pacers to a quick 12-0 lead.
Hayes never looked back.
Demeko Barnes, a junior, picked up a forfeit win at 120 to push the edge to 18-0, 2016 state qualifier Zach Williams pinned the Celtics’ Josh Snitkin in 1:14 at 132 and Jason Dominguez slipped past Kathen Manakkal 5-4 at 138 to keep the momentum on Hayes’ side of the mat.
Other Pacer standouts included freshman Emmett Cain, who pinned Nick Henkel in just 45 seconds at 145; Corbin May, who nabbed a forfeit win at 152; Carter Davidson, who handled Zach Kowatch 12-5 at 182; 2016 state qualifier Max Wright, who pinned Drew Kavinski in 56 seconds at 195; and heavyweight Glenn Pauley, who forced Cam Craig to the mat in 3:57 to smooth out the scoring summary.
