Climate change programs, discussion planned

A climate change documentary, “Before the Flood”, followed by a moderated community discussion, will be shown each Saturday in January in the social room of the First Presbyterian Church, 73 W. Winter St., Delaware.

Showings are Jan 7 at 7 p.m.; Jan 14 at 2 p.m., Jan 21 at 2 p.m. and Jan. 28 at 7 p.m.

“Before the Flood” presents a riveting account of the dramatic changes occurring around the world due to climate change, a news release states. The film follows Leonardo DeCaprio, as the United Nations ambassador, as he travels to five continents and the Arctic speaking with scientists, world leaders, activists and local residents to gain a deeper understanding of this complex issue.

The core issues represented in his journey are fossil fuels, methane gas, palm oil, geopolitical landscape and US political landscape.

The moderator following the 1/7 showing of the film will be Dr. Laurie Anderson. Dr. Anderson is professor in the Department of Botany and Microbiology at Ohio Wesleyan University. She teaches classes in biology, ecology, and global environmental change. Her research interests include the interactions of plants with climate change, invasive plants, and continental-scale ecology.

She has led student travel classes to Brazil and was selected by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education as the 2015 Ohio Professor of the Year.

This free community film showing is co-hosted by: Sustainable Delaware, Citizen’s Climate Lobby, and Earth Care Team, and First Presbyterian Church.
