Bishops rally past Tigers in NCAC showdown

Jeret Gerber drilled a pair of three-pointers, the first giving the OWU men’s basketball team its first lead of the game with 11:55 left in the second half, on the way to a 76-70 come-from-behind win over visiting Wittenberg in NCAC action Wednesday at Branch Rickey Arena.

Gerber’s first triple got the Bishops (10-6, 7-2 NCAC) over the hump, giving them a 51-50 lead. They never trailed again.

The freshman hit another on the ensuing possession to make it a 54-50 game and, after a Grant Gossard free throw and a Tiger hoop, Erick Bryant connected from long distance to balloon the OWU edge to six.

Wittenberg’s Shane Edwards missed the front end of a one-and-one which would have tied the game with 3:27 left, and Nate Axelrod, who finished with a game-best 21 points, sank a layup to make it a 68-65 game with three minutes to go.

The Tigers (10-6, 4-5 NCAC) pulled within one when Landon Hormann converted a layin with 1:31 left, but couldn’t get any closer as Ohio Wesleyan made all eight of its free throws in the final 30 seconds, two by Gerber, two more from Seth Clark and four by Axelrod, to seal the deal.

Ohio Wesleyan managed just six fourth-quarter points as host Wittenberg rolled to a 69-53 NCAC win Wednesday night.

Taylor Dickson hit three three-pointers on the way to a game-high 21 points, but she didn’t get a ton of help. Megan Kuether added 12 points, but the Bishops (6-11, 3-5 NCAC) scored just seven points off the bench.

Jimmy Davis finished with games of 267 and 194 to lead Buckeye Valley to a 2,385-2,259 win over Elgin Wednesday afternoon.

Jacob Moeslein was also solid, finishing with games of 205 and 247 for the Barons, who improved to a perfect 12-0 with the win.

Madi Shearer finished with a team-high series of 353 as Buckeye Valley fell to a tough Elgin team by a 2,108-1,901 margin Wednesday afternoon.
