Hayes girls nab top-3 finish at district bowling tourney

Delaware Hayes used a solid three games of regulation to climb into the top two before a steady showing in bakers earned them a third-place finish in Friday’s Girls Division I District Bowling Tournament at Sawmill Lanes.

The finish earned the Pacers, who closed with a combined total of 3,740, a spot in the upcoming state showcase. They will join district champ Briggs (3,888), runner-up Whitehall-Yearling (3,811) and fourth-place Gahanna (3,611).

Hayes was led by senior Alicia Halstead, who finished with games of 235, 258 and 164 to close with a three-game total of 657 — the third-best series among all bowlers. Only Whitehall-Yearling’s Madison Stiffler (760) and Eastmoor Academy’s Averi Brown (663) were better.

The Pacers’ Emma Wasielewski also nabbed a top-10 finish, closing with games of 201, 169 and 201 for a combined 598. Jenna VanGundy, meanwhile, finished 12th among individuals with a 565 series.

Orange and Olentangy were also in action at the tourney, finishing seventh and ninth with respective totals of 3,405 and 3,318.

Neither qualified for states as teams, but both will be represented when the tournament gets underway Friday morning at Wayne Webb’s Columbus Bowl. The Braves’ Stephanie Shurman and Pioneers’ SarahKate Palmer punched tickets as individuals with respective three-game totals of 606 and 605 — the fifth- and sixth-best marks among individuals.

Big Walnut’s Kaitlyn Morrison also earned a spot in the state showcase, qualifying with a three-game total of 571 — the 10th-best series among individuals.
