The weekend’s OCC championship meets treated area athletes quite well.
Orange’s boys and girls both captured team titles, as did Big Walnut’s girls, and more than a few locals made noise as individuals.
Hayes had a handful of champions in the Buckeye-Division showcase, which wrapped up Saturday in Dublin.
League champs included Madeline Hayes, who won the girls pole vault (10-06); and freshman Sydney McMillin, who won the girls 200 (25.74 seconds) in the first league championship meet of her young career.
The Pacers also took top honors in the girls 4×200 as Ashley Smiley, McMillin, Torie Young and Brooke Glesenkamp combined to finish in 1:44.40.
Hayes’ girls finished fourth with 72 points while the boys closed fifth with 51.
Orange, which had the honor of hosting the OCC-Buckeye championship, went out and picked up a pair of team titles Saturday in Lewis Center. The girls won with 155.66 points while the boys took top honors with 187.
Pioneer winners included Brenda Agyekum in the girls 100 (12.33 seconds), Allison Guagenti in the girls 800 (2:16.64) and 1,600 (4:58.73), Anna Watson in the girls pole vault (13-03), Megan Cochran in the girls discus (113-04), Zach Harrison in the boys 200 (21.58 seconds), TJ Coates in the boys 400 (49.25 seconds), Tyler King in the boys 800 (1:56.65), Hunter Moore in the boys 1,600 (4:21. 05) and 3,200 (9:32.69), Jayden Rodgers in the boys 110 hurdles (14.41 seconds) and high jump (6-04), Nate Roush in the boys pole vault (14-0), Jaeschal Acheampong in the boys long jump (22-07.25) and Zach Skidmore in the boys shot put (50-10.75).
Orange also won the boys 4×200 (Joel Sarpong, Coates, Kevin Acheampong and Harrison), 4×400 (Coates, King, Christian Wright and Harrison) and 4×800 (Tommy Heiden King, Andrew Schroff and Moore) relays, padding its point total in respective times of 1:28.40, 3:24.55 and 7:59.49.
Liberty, which finished third and fourth in the Buckeye’s girls and boys divisions, respectively, nabbed first-place points from Abby Summers in the girls 200 (24.91 seconds), Sydney Englehart in the girls 400 (58.87 seconds) and Emma Bower in the girls 3,200 (11:15.36).
Olentangy, also competing in the Buckeye, finished fifth in the girls division and third in the boys division.
Big Walnut’s girls, which won the Capital-Division crown with 158 points Saturday in Dublin, got wins from the 4×400 relay quartet of Tori Buxton, Emma Padgett, Hanna Pinkston and Kaitlin Meade (4:11.53), the 4×800 relay team of Meade, Padgett, Adelee Gartner and Colbi Borland (9:52.80), Borland in the 1,600 (5:31.44) and 3,200 (12:33.31), Meade in the 800 (2:25.26), Anna Vrancken in the discus (118-01).
The Golden Eagle boys, who finished third in the Capital with 96 points, were led by Brandon Mosher, who won the shot put with a throw of 56-10.25; and Abe Myers, who took top honors in the discus with a toss of 177-08. Both set new Capital-Division records. Josh Halbakken also picked up first-place points, winning the pole vault with an effort of 11-06.
