Free car seat checks Saturday at Delaware AAA

AAA and the Delaware General Health District are teaming up to offer free car seat and booster seat checks this week.

National Car Seat Check will be observed on Saturday, Sept. 23. Checks will be conducted from 9 a.m. to noon at the Delaware AAA store parking lot, 840 Sunbury Road.

According to a press release from AAA, data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration shows that car crashes remain the leading cause of death for children, ages 1 to 13. In passenger cars, proper use of child safety seats reduces the risk of death by 71 percent for infants and by 54 percent for toddlers. However, about three quarters of seats are installed incorrectly.

To help local caregivers ensure their most precious cargo is safe while riding in the car, certified child passenger safety technicians from the Delaware General Health District will perform free car and booster seat checks for caregivers during the event on Saturday. During each check, technicians will teach caregivers how to properly install and use their car seats.

In addition, technicians will check for car seat recalls, review the importance of registering seats with the manufacturer, and educate caregivers on the dangers of loose items and unbuckled passengers in vehicles.
