BV’s Kreft, Dawson win at Midwest Meet of Champions

When Buckeye Valley’s Zach Kreft and Chloe Dawson are on, they’re on … and boy were they on during Saturday’s Midwest Meet of Champions at Hilliard Darby High School.

Kreft, already the BV school-record holder and defending Division II state champion, was on a whole different level in the boys’ race. Kreft won, which is nothing new to the senior standout, but he did it in a time of 14:29.95 — the fastest 5K ever by an Ohio high school cross country runner and the fastest in the nation so far this season.

The Baron boys finished 14th as a team. Other contributors included Nathan Holst (16:22), Gavin Shearer (16:26), Bill Daily (17:11), Jacob Zinn (17:31), Nathan Heiser (17:33) and Cameron Hurt (17:46).

Kreft, Holst and Shearer currently own the fastest three times in BV history.

In girls’ action, Dawson, who is just a freshman, remained undefeated on the season by winning in a new personal record and school-record time of 17:26.06.

The Barons, who finished 16th, also got solid showings from Bailey Kreft (20:11), Chayse Arnhold (20:11), Ashley Beatty (20:12), Lane Graham (20:27), Susie York (20:46) and Jia Radloff (20:55).

Olentangy Orange also competed in the event. The Pioneer boys finished sixth while the girls closed seventh.

Andrew Schroff led Orange’s boys, finishing ninth in 15:30.74. Tommy Wintering also nabbed a top-20 showing, closing 15th in 15:48.70.

The Pioneer girls were powered by Allison Guagenti’s fourth-place finish (17:38.71). Lindsay Ott was also steady, finishing 23rd (18:57.52) among the 186 girls in action.

Delaware Christian got off to a good start, winning the first set, but couldn’t keep the momentum on its side of the net en route to a four-set setback to visiting Centerburg Saturday in Delaware.

The Eagles won the first set 25-11, but dropped the next three by respective scores of 25-27, 23-25 and 15-25.

Lyssi Snouffer led DCS with 23 kills, 17 digs and three blocks — her 14th double-double of the season. Sarah Rosato was also solid, finishing with 10 kills, 10 digs and a team-best seven aces.

Anna Fuller and Erin Bauslaugh led in digs and assists with respective totals of 18 and 33.

Also: Utica def. Buckeye Valley 25-22, 25-18, 25-22.

Trey Rath and Grant Smeltzer fired 78s to lead Olentangy Liberty to runner-up honors at Saturday’s Jerome Honorary at Tartan Fields.

Cole Corder and Jacob Hickman finished with 81s while Josh Steyer had an 82.

The Patriots finished with a combined 318.

Ben Daily, Jared Gedde and Felipe Scharff found the back of the net, all in the second half, to lift Buckeye Valley to a 3-1 non-league win over Cristo Rey Saturday afternoon.

Cole Davis finished with one save in the Baron net.

Also: Olentangy Orange 1, Gahanna Lincoln 1.

Olentangy 6, Marysville 0.
