Registration is still open for the sixth annual Dash At Dusk which takes place this Sunday at Liberty Park in Powell.

The 5K walk/run is held every year to raise awareness for domestic violence and this year all the proceeds will benefit the nonprofit agency Turning Point, which is building a shelter for domestic violence survivors in Delaware.

The event is Sunday, Oct. 8 in Liberty Park in Powell. Same-day registration begins at 4:30 p.m., the warm up begins at 5 p.m. and the race begins at 5:30 p.m.

This is the sixth year for the event since it was started by the Delaware County Coalition of Victim Services.

Delaware County Prosecutor Carol O’Brien said her office is one of the major forces behind the event. She said it’s crucial to raise awareness because domestic violence isn’t talked about as much as other crime.

“I have always felt the victims of domestic violence are given short shrift in the justice system and part of that is because domestic violence has always been this hidden crime,” O’Brien said. “We don’t talk about it. We don’t admit it and we think it’s shameful and think if it happened to you it’s because you did something wrong.”

O’Brien said people blame victims of domestic violence for not leaving instead of blaming the perpetrators of domestic violence for continuing to abuse their partner.

“I think one of the things I’ve tried to do as a prosecutor is to make sure law enforcement knows where we stand and knows that we will take these cases to trial,” O’Brien said.

O’Brien added that domestic violence cases are very difficult because it’s often shameful for the victim and because victims can be uncooperative at times. Nevertheless, O’Brien said taking domestic violence cases to trial is critical.

“We have to break the cycle,” she said.

O’Brien said Dash At Dusk is a family-friendly event. She said everyone can take the event at their own pace. O’Brien said she would be walking in the event.

“[I hope people gain] empathy, awareness, education, and a future ability to look at situation and not judge them as those situations have been judged in the past,” O’Brien said.

O’Brien said she hopes the event shines a light on the problem and celebrates domestic violence survivors.
