Glad You Asked: Behold! The Great GeekFest cometh

0

On Saturday, Oct. 21 the Delaware County District Library will host its second annual Great GeekFest — a comic-con for all ages! This extraordinary event first debuted last year at the Orange Branch Library and brought more than 1,700 people through the doors of the library. With everything from fan panels and cosplay to gaming tournaments and photo ops, it was a one-of-a-kind event for Delaware County.

This year, we move the fun to the Delaware Main Library from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. This allows us for more space, easier access to public transportation through DATA Bus, and the ability to partner with downtown vendors for food, drink and shopping within walking distance.

One of the most exciting parts of this year’s Great GeekFest is we have two world-class featured speakers on a main stage. Todd Robbins is a New York City-based performer who has spent decades specializing in arcane forms of popular entertainment, offbeat amusements and intriguing deceptions. You’ll catch him on television as the host of Investigation Discovery’s hit series “True Nightmares.”

Grace Ellis is the creator of the best-selling and award-winning graphic novel series, “Lumberjanes,” and new series “Moonstruck.” Grace will be bringing her entire “Moonstruck” team with her for her appearance, including Shae Beagle and Laurenn McCubbin. The “Moonstruck” team goes on the main stage at 1 p.m. and is followed by performer Todd Robbins at 2 p.m.

If you’re hooked and want to know more, stop by the Library or visit www.delawarelibrary.org/ggf to see the full schedule of events for the day. In the mean time, satiate your “geeky” taste buds with some stories from the sci-fi, steampunk, and fantasy genres.

“The Massacre of Mankind: A Sequel to the War of the Worlds” by Stephen Baxter. A sequel to H. G. Wells’ classic, “The War of the Worlds,” takes place 14 years after the Martian invasion, where a more technologically prepared Earth is nevertheless overcome by a second invasion that is documented by Walker Jenkins’ sister-in-law, who would help humanity organize a desperate last effort to survive.

“An Alchemy of Masques and Mirrors” by Curtis Craddock. Believing her arranged marriage will stave off a disastrous conflict, Princess Isabelle des Zephyrs, finds herself targeted by an assassin, but with the aid of her loyal musketeer, she begins to unravel the lies of her enemies and discover a dangerous truth.

“The Stone Sky” by N.K. Jemisin. A conclusion to the Hugo Award-winning, post-apocalyptic trilogy that began with “The Fifth Season” reveals how the powers and agendas of two women determine the fate of humankind in the wake of a returning Moon.

“Autonomous” by Annalee Newitz. Judith “Jack” Chen, a scientist-turned-drug pirate, travels the world in a submarine to bring cheap medicine to the poor, but when her latest drug hack results in a trail of lethal overdoses, she is pursued by a jaded military agent and his robotic partner.
