Voters in Berlin, Liberty, and Orange townships elected some new faces to their respective boards of trustees during the general election on Tuesday.

Berlin Township

Incumbent Steve Flaherty lost by one vote to Tom D’ Amico. Flaherty said his loss was heartbreaking and that the people of the township have spoken. He doesn’t plan to contest the vote.

“I truly enjoyed representing the township in this unique period of growth,” he said. “Berlin had three good, qualified candidates running and the residents recognized that. I’m proud of what we as a board accomplished in the last four years and look forward to Berlin’s bright future.”

D’ Amico said his win won’t be final until Nov. 27 when the Delaware County Board of Elections rules on the provisional ballots.

“I have mixed emotions and it’s also stressful,” he said. “I’m very happy that people stepped up and voted for me, but I won’t know until Nov. 27.”

Ken O’Brien received the most votes of the three candidates with 776. He said Berlin is a great township and he is glad to be serving the resident as a trustee again.

“I’m very happy to be back serving the residents,” he said. “I’m looking forward it again.”

Liberty Township

Michael Gemperline and Holly Adams led in the polls with Trustee Shyra Eichhorn trailing most of the evening. However, in the end, Eichhorn had won another four years as trustee by 121 votes over Adams.

“We were holding out hope until the very end since we knew my strongest supporting precincts had not reported,” Eichhorn said. “I am honored and thankful to serve as the voice of the residents for another term.”

Eichhorn quickly switched gears to the “community’s powerful message” and “overwhelming support of the township fire renewal levy.”

“I was thrilled to see Mike Gemperline and Trustee Leneghan pledge their support to our current township fire-based EMS model,” she said.

Not wasting any time, Tuesday afternoon Gemperline was out picking up his signs from around the township.

“I’m out here pulling up 1,100 signs,” he said.

While on the campaign trail, Gemeprline said he knocked on as many doors as possible. He thinks he knocked on about 2,800 doors total.

“I tried to meet them all,” he said. ” It’s been an emotional drain, I’ve been through this township like I never knew it existed.”

Gemperline finished with 2,894 votes. Eichhorn received 2,752 votes. Adams collected 2,631 votes. Bryan Newell finished with 2,003 votes. Scott Lynch pulled 854 votes and Christopher Shear gathered 789 votes.

Orange Township

Debbie Taranto led with the most votes through the evening with Ryan Rivers taking an early lead over incumbent Rob Quigley.

Taranto ended the night with 3,176 votes, allowing her another four years as a trustee.

“I appreciate the confidence in me by the re-election vote,” she said.

Rivers won the other seat on the board with 2,692 votes.

“I’m very excited and looking to get to work,” Rivers said. ” Hopefully, I can bring some new things to the table, some new energy and new thoughts.”

Quigley said he was humbled to have been able to serve the residents of Orange Township for the last eight years.

“I can walk away knowing that the township is financially stable and on a path to prosperity,” he said. “It will be up to the new board to decide if that continues. Thank you to everyone that supported me over the years.”
