Patriots, Eagles stay perfect in league play

The Olentangy Liberty girls volleyball team reeled off another one Thursday, winning their 17th straight game while improving to 8-0 in league play with a solid three-set win over host Westerville North.

The Patriots, who clinched a share of the OCC-Buckeye Division crown, won the first two sets by identical 25-9 margins before sealing the deal with a 25-16 win in the third.

Liberty coach Jen Chapman said her team’s recipe for success hasn’t been a complicated one this season.

“I think we just have a well-rounded team,” she said. “They have a lot of fun together and play hard.”

Claranne Fechter and Taylor Karlo led the attack with a combined 18 kills, 10 for Fechter and eight off the hand of Karlo. Fechter and Maile Steckelberg finished with 10 digs apiece, Logan Flaugh had a team-leading 27 assists and Steckelberg and Flaugh each had three aces in the win.

Next up, Liberty will play in a quad Saturday at Hilliard Darby.

Big Walnut 3, Newark 0

The Golden Eagles continued their dominance of OCC-Capital Division foes, sweeping away the host Wildcats Thursday in Newark.

Big Walnut, which stayed perfect in league play while wrapping up at least a share of the title, won the first set 25-17 before taking the next two by respective scores of 25-16 and 25-9.

Kaley Rammelsberg led the charge, finishing with a team-best 11 kills. Caroline Speelman and Mac Podraza were also solid, finishing with eight and seven kills, respectively.

The Eagles smooth out the regular season with league games against visiting Franklin Heights (Tuesday) and host Groveport-Madison (Thursday).

Worthington Kilbourne 3, Delaware Hayes 0

Sydney Krewson had nine kills and 17 digs and Anna Johnson added six kills, 11 assists and 15 digs to lead the Pacers during Thursday’s 18-25, 13-25, 21-25 loss to the host Wolves.

GIRLS SOCCER

Gia Gaetano scored an early goal off a feed from Lyndsey Kijowski and Laura Bichsel found the back of the net 29 seconds into the second half to give Olentangy Liberty a lead it wouldn’t relinquish Thursday against visiting Gahanna Lincoln.

The Patriots won 2-1 — their third straight victory.

Riley Cartwright had two saves in the win.

Austin Corley scored the game’s lone goal and Connor Sexton had a pair of saves to lead Olentangy Berlin to a 1-0 win over host Bexley Thursday night.
