Barons win regular-season finale

The Buckeye Valley boys soccer team put a bow on the regular season with a win, blanking host Highland 4-0 Thursday evening.

The Barons (8-5-2, 5-1-0 MOAC) controlled the action much of the night, scoring a pair of goals in both halves. Aspen Schneller found the back of the net off a feed from Eli Aquino in the fourth minute and Cole Davis, normally a goalie, scored the first goal of his career 20 minutes later.

Alex Brown and Aquino scored the second-half tallies off feeds from Felipe Scharff and Zach Church, respectively. The assist from Church earned him his first-career point.

“We had to adjust to the faster pitch, and the wind made it even more of a challenge,” BV coach Eric Staley said. “But, we just kept the ball on the ground and held possession very well.

“Eli and Jack (Rotondo) controlled the middle of the field all night. Charlie (Daily) and Aspen were solid, as always, and it was great to see Cole and Zach get into the box score.”

Next up, Buckeye Valley will host River Valley at 5 p.m. in the first round of the Division II district tournament Tuesday in Delaware.

The Braves snapped a four-game skid Thursday, getting a pair of goals from Christian Bowens on the way to a non-league win over the Jaguars Thursday night in Lewis Center.

“We passed well, we defended well,” Olentangy coach Kyle Hamrick said. “We played like we did (last game) against Liberty, just got the ball to go in the net this time.”

Drew Clement and Alec Heidl, who got the team rolling with the first goal, also scored in the win.

Grant Robinson, meanwhile, anchored the defense with six saves.
