Delaware County voters as well as voters in several other counties elected to give Judge Patricia Delaney a third-term on the Fifth District Court of Appeals.
Delaney was originally elected to the seat in 2006 and received 59 percent (248,923) of the votes in the Fifth District, which includes Ashland County, Coshocton County, Delaware County, Fairfield County, Guernsey County, Holmes County, Knox County, Licking County, Morgan County, Morrow County, Muskingum County, Perry County, Richland County, Stark County and Tuscarawas County. She was elected to a second term in 2012.
“I’m obviously pleased to be re-elected to a third term,” Delaney said Wednesday morning. “We have a hard working staff and voters recognized and appreciated that. The best way to get elected is do your job and do it well. I’m very honored to serve Delaware County. I hope that trend continues.”
In Delaware County, Delaney received 41,282 votes (61.5 percent), and she defeated challenger Andrew King, who received 25,843 votes (38.5 percent) in Delaware County and 169,519 votes (41 percent) in the whole district.
King hails from Licking County and currently works in the civil division of the Delaware County Prosecutor’s Office.
“I am very thankful for the support and warm reception that I received across the district,” King said Wednesday morning. “I am proud of how hard we worked. I thank everyone that voted and wish Judge Delaney nothing but the best.”
Delaney, a Delaware resident, said when she was elected in 2006 she was the first judge in 30 years to be elected to the court who wasn’t from Stark County, where the Fifth District Court is seated.
“It feels wonderful to be supported by your community,” Delaney said. “We’ve lived here for almost two decades now, and we’ve seen Delaware County change quite a bit during that time. I think that my re-election reflects a wide base of support for our court here in Delaware County.”
Delaney said she hopes for more judges on the court from other counties and more women judges.
“It’s good for our court that we have local representation in Canton,” Delaney said. “I think that they appreciate the work that I do there as well. It’s an honor. (Hopefully), we’ll continue to have more representation and diversity on the court.”
Delaney’s current term expires in 2019, when her third six-year term will begin and run until 2025.
