The Olentangy Orange and Big Walnut girls track and field teams got their seasons off to solid starts Saturday, finishing first and second, respectively, at the Newark Invitational.
The Pioneers ran away with top honors with a team score of 132. The Golden Eagles nabbed runner-up honors with 80 while Thomas Worthington smoothed out the top three with 78. Delaware Hayes was also in action, closing 10th with 33 points.
Orange was boosted by Grace Frye, who won the 200-meter dash (27.02 seconds) and shot put (35-01.5); Allison Guagenti, who picked up first-place points in the 1,600 (5:13.88); Sara Borton, who won the pole vault (10-0); Lindsay Ott, who finished second in the 800 (2:26.10); and Anna Grabau, who was second in the discus (103-03) and high jump (4-10)
The Pioneers also won the 4×100 relay (52.26 seconds) and finished second in the 4×200 (1:55.55) and 4×400 (4:19.88)
Big Walnut’s top point producers included Kaley Rammelsberg, who finished first in the high jump (5-0) and second in the 100 hurdles (16.30 seconds); and Colbi Borland, who was first in the 3,200 (11:39.14) and third in the 1,600 (5:18.95).
The Golden Eagles also finished second in the 4×800 relay (10:27.60).
Hayes’ best finish belonged to Ari Avant, who won the 100 and 300 hurdles (16.24 and 48.02 seconds, respectively).
In boys’ action, Orange finished sixth with 61.5 points and Hayes was 10th with 30.5.
Alex Kenish led the Pioneers with a second-place showing in the 1,600 (4:35.57). Other individual standouts included Joel Addo, who was third in the high jump (5-08).
Orange’s 4×400 relay team was also solid, winning its event (3:37.35).
The Pacers’ best showing, meanwhile, came in the 4×100 relay. They finished second (44.97 seconds). Orion Ward also nabbed runner-up honors, finishing second in the long jump (20-01.5).
BOYS LACROSSE
Bexley took a 3-2 lead into the second quarter, but visiting Big Walnut dominated the rest of the way en route to a 15-4 win Saturday afternoon.
John Grumney and Judah Lozano had three goals, an assist and a forced turnover apiece while Nathan Montgomery finished with two goals, four forced turnovers and six ground balls.
Josh Hageman anchored the defense with 10 saves in the Golden Eagle goal.
Cincinnati Moeller 7, Olentangy Liberty 6
Joey Wiseman had a hat trick and Alex Theuerkauf finished with a pair of helpers, but Moeller held on notch a non-league win Saturday afternoon.
Medina 11, Olentangy 9
Aidan Moore and Khairi Sears had three goals each, and combined for three assists, to lead the Braves in Saturday’s setback at the hands of Medina.
