The Ohio Wesleyan women’s basketball team put on a clinic on both ends of the floor, coupling stellar shooting with stingy defense to notch a lopsided 87-35 North Coast Athletic Conference win over visiting Oberlin Wednesday night at Branch Rickey Arena.

The Bishops led 20-7 after the first quarter and never looked back. They won the second 24-12 and, after a 15-14 third, punctuated the win with a dominant 28-2 fourth.

Alyssa Griner led the charge with 21 points and seven rebounds. Lauren Denison and Kasey Schipfer also finished in double figures, closing with 16 and 12 points, respectively.

OWU shot especially well early on, making more than 60% of its shots in the first half (17-for-28), including a 44% clip from three-point land (4-for-9).

The Bishops (12-8, 7-2 NCAC) cooled off a bit in the second half, but still finished with a shooting percentage close to 50% for the game.

Oberlin (12-8, 5-4 NCAC), meanwhile, which shot just 24.1% as a team, couldn’t get much of anything going all night long. Jaedyn O’Reilly and Gina Lombard led the way with seven points apiece.

Next up, Ohio Wesleyan will look to secure its fourth straight win when it hosts Kenyon Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Jack Clement poured in a game-best 29 points and Tony Carter came a point away from a double-double to lead the Ohio Wesleyan men’s basketball team to an 80-65 NCAC win over visiting Oberlin Wednesday night at Branch Rickey Arena.

The Bishops, who improved to 14-6 overall and 9-2 in conference play, used a 43-point first half to take control. OWU then outscored Oberlin 37-34 in the second to seal the deal.

Carter backed Clement with a team-best 12 points to go with nine points. Other Bishop standouts included Henry Hinkle, who finished with 15 points and four assists; Isaac Ward, who finished in double figures with 10; and Grant Spicer, who had nine points in the win.

Anastasis Spyroglou led Oberlin (6-15, 2-10 NCAC) with 15 points.

Ohio Wesleyan returns to action Saturday at Wabash. Tip is set for 2 p.m.
