The Buckeye Valley girls basketball team won its second league game in three days Thursday, outlasting host Marion Harding 48-44 thanks to some clutch free throws and solid defense down the stretch.
With the Barons up two late, Morgan Scowden, who finished with 12 points and four assists, calmly sank a pair of tosses from the charity stripe to seal the deal. The defense then forced a steal to prevent the Presidents from getting off a final shot.
The game was tight throughout. Really tight.
Harding owned an 11-10 edge after the first quarter, but, thanks to a 10-9 BV advantage in the second, the teams went to the break tied at 20. Both squads scored nine points in the third to set up a nip-and-tuck fourth.
Megan Veneman led Buckeye Valley (3-3, 3-1 MOAC-Red Division) with 13 points to go with four assists. Other standouts included Logan Hatcher, who finished with nine points and eight rebounds; and Tess Hughes, who closed with 10 points and six boards in the win.
Next up, the Barons return home to take on visiting Hayes in non-league action Tuesday night.
