The Hardware Exchange will be hosting the “John Freeman’s ‘Whatever you think it’s worth’ annual Christmas breakfast” this Saturday morning.
The event begins at 5:30 a.m. and is scheduled to run until 11:30 a.m. or until the food runs out, on the second floor of The Hardware Exchange at 141 S. Sandusky St.
This will be the 37th time the event has been held since it began in 1978.
Attendees can come to the store and buy breakfast with whatever amount of money they feel is appropriate. Freeman said the proceeds of the breakfast go to several local charities and all the event’s workers are volunteers.
Freeman said he began the breakfast when he owned Freeman’s 76, a service station on North Sandusky Street, as a way to thank his customers around Christmas time. Freeman said he originally declined to accept any money for the breakfast but eventually began letting people pay what they wanted and Freeman would take the money and donate it to charities.
Freeman said that after he closed the service station, his friends wanted to start the event back up.
“It’s a good gesture,” Freeman said. “Just a bunch of friends trying to give back to the community.”
He said the menu hasn’t changed much since they started the event and has all the traditional breakfast food and drinks.
Freeman said he and volunteers were setting up for the event Wednesday afternoon.
