The Delaware school board approved the purchase of a home on West Heffner Street on Monday.

The board approved a real estate purchase contract to acquire a single-family home at 173 W. Heffner St. adjacent to Smith Elementary School. The purchase price was $150,000, plus a closing charge of $1,945. The money will be taken from the permanent improvements accounts.

The school plans to build a 17,989 square-foot addition that would include a new gymnasium, school-age child care (SACC) programs and expanded parking.

The board also approved the purchase of four 77-passenger school buses and a school bus equipped to handle wheelchairs. The board approved the Metropolitan Council to advertise and receive bids on the board’s behalf.

The board accepted the resignations of several staff members, including:

• Sam Young, a science teacher at Dempsey Middle School.

• Tammy Ruby, an administrative assistant at the administration building.

• Alexis Blaylock, a SACC specialist.

• Jeri O’Brien, a technology specialist at Smith.

• Lore Meyer, an educational assistant at Woodward Elementary.

• Eric Heminger, an intervention specialist at Hayes High School.

The board approved hiring three new teachers: Jeffrey Dapo, who will teach Spanish at Hayes; Nicholas Kitts, who will teach eighth-grade science at Dempsey; and Tiffany Swartz, who will teach first grade at Woodward.

The board also approved hiring Sophia Whitehouse, a school psychologist; Marinda Fries, a speech language pathologist; and Stacie Newman an administrative assistant to the superintendent.

The board also approved the Willis Heartland Outdoor Education Camp Trip for sixth-graders. The trip will take place Oct. 26-30.
