Weekend storms may flood roads

The Delaware County Emergency Management Agency says this weekend’s rainfall could close some roads in Delaware County.

The EMA said there is a strong chance of showers and thunderstorms this weekend as the remnants of Tropical Storm Bill move through the regional.

Sandy Mackey, public information officer at the EMA, said there were no reports of damage due to the high waters of the Scioto River this week, although it did close some roads for a period.

The Delaware County Sheriff’s Office said Friday afternoon that there had also been no reports of storm damage from Thursday night’s severe storm.

However, flooded roadways and high water remain a concern in the county during periods of heavy rain and the EMA is urging residents to remember to “Turn Around Don’t Drown” if they see a road covered in high water or a sign with a similar warning.

The National Weather Service reports there is a 90 percent chance of heavy rain Saturday and a 30 percent chance of thunderstorms Saturday night.

The service also reports a 60 percent chance of thunderstorms during the day Sunday and a 50 percent chance of storms Sunday night.

New rainfall amounts are estimated between a tenth and a quarter of an inch for Saturday and Sunday with higher amounts possible as a result of the storms.

Delaware County residents can sign up for the EMA’s CodeRED program, which will notify residents of severe weather or tornadoes via phone, text or email. More information can be found at delcoema.org.
