‘Astonishing Race’ set for Aug. 1

Registrations being taken by Preservation Parks of Delaware County for the “Astonishing Race.”

Registrations are due July 29 for the “Astonishing Race,” a program that will have teams competing to complete challenges in the park. The challenges, which could involve eating (gummy) worms or casting a fishing line into a target, all focus on nature themes.

The first team to complete all the challenges with the best time will win the grand prize.

The event, for all ages, will take place Saturday, Aug. 1, starting at 6:30 p.m. at Gallant Woods Preserve, 2151 Buttermilk Hill Road.

Registration is not required for the following programs:

• “What does the Rock Say?” Thursday, July 23, 6:30 p.m. Participants will walk Big Run Creek to learn what the rocks and geologic formations reveal about the formation of the park landscape. Wear appropriate footgear for walking in the creek. Ages 10 and older. Shale Hollow Preserve, 6320 Artesian Run.

• “Thursday Evening Concerts: Trombones Plus.” Thursday, July 23, 7-8:30 p.m. This free concert will feature the big Band sound. Bring chairs or blankets, and a picnic dinner if desired. All ages. Gallant Woods Preserve.

• “Little Adventurers.” Tuesday, July 28, 10 a.m. The informal outdoor preschool program is designed to help children explore and become comfortable in nature. A short “look and find” hike will be followed by hands-on activities. Free; ages 0-5. Shale Hollow Preserve.

• “Thursday Evening Concerts: Lords of Literature.” Thursday, July 30, 7-8:30 p.m. This free concert will feature 1980s, ’90s and current rock. Bring chairs or blankets, and a picnic dinner if desired. All ages. Gallant Woods Preserve.
