Delaware County students will have less back-to-school shopping to do after the “Supplies for Scholars” event Friday at Woodward Elementary School.
The event is a partnership between Delaware City Schools and the United Way of Delaware County, the primary sponsor, and will begin at 9 a.m. at Woodward Elementary.
“We know school supplies can be expensive for families so we wanted to give families the help they need to make the start of school less stressful and less of a financial burden,” said Jennifer Ruhe, director of communications for Delaware City Schools.
The school supplies were donated by many local organizations, churches and business.
The donated school supplies include: backpacks, notebook paper, pens, pencils, crayons, markers, colored pencils, scissors, folders, glue sticks, erasers, highlighters, Post-It Notes, composition notebooks, dry erase markers and three-ring binders.
Ruhe said families will check in when they arrive and receive a number for each child in attendance. They will then serve students in numerical order.
Families attending without their students will be limited to two sets of supplies.
Volunteer shopping assistants will help families select their backpacks and fill them with supplies.
Check-in begins at 8 a.m. and the shopping begins at 9 a.m.
Ruhe said this is the second time the schools have held the event and are prepared to serve 1,500 families. Ruhe said the event is open to Delaware County residents.
Ruhe added that while students wait in line, they can participate in activities like “Touch-A-Truck” or play in inflatables.
A limited number of free haircuts will be given by volunteer stylists.
Ruhe estimated the event would conclude around noon but said it may end sooner if supplies run out.
