After missing out on medalist honors at last year’s Steve Youmans Classic, and by a single stroke, Hayes senior Grant Godfrey made it his mission to bring the honor home next chance he got.

Mission accomplished.

Godfrey was next to automatic off the tee and with his approach shots, taking top individual honors at this year’s Youmans with a 71 Saturday at Oakhaven.

Even as the low individual, Godfrey said he could have played better.

“It felt good winning, but I wasn’t happy with the score,” he said. “I hit 16 out of 18 greens, but I struggled with the putter or else it could have been a really good round.

“I’m happy with my ball striking, though … I’m hitting the ball great.”

Team wise, host Olentangy led the slew of Delaware County teams in action, finishing second overall with a combined 315. Ryan Wright and Nick Scott led the Braves with 78s while Garrett Varanelli (79), Jake Gerard (80) and Matthew Homza (85) also chipped in.

Upper Arlington won the invite with a combined 312 while Orange finished 11th (334), Hayes closed 12th (337) and Liberty’s “B” team finished 14th among the 15-team field with a 341.

Zach Mahon led the Pioneers with a 78 while Spencer Gifford (83), Connor Cummins (85) and John Mikulec (88) smoothed out the team’s top four.

The Pacers’ David Kelly and Jared Piroska, meanwhile, complemented Godfrey’s score with respective rounds of 86 and 89.
