Junior wide receiver Tim Shadoan (Dublin/Scioto) booted a 43-yard field goal in the second overtime period to lift the Ohio Wesleyan football team to a 23-20 North Coast Athletic Conference victory over Kenyon on Saturday in Gambier.

Ohio Wesleyan trailed, 20-13, midway through the fourth quarter when the Bishops forced a Kenyon punt. Shadoan returned the punt 23 yards to the Ohio Wesleyan 35, and on the first play from scrimmage, junior quarterback Cheyne Lacanaria (Farmington, Mich./Brother Rice) connected with sophomore wide receiver Ian Willians (Naples, Fla./Collier) for 64 yards down the sideline, with Williams ruled out of bounds at the Kenyon 1-yard line. On the next play, freshman running back Jesse Beachy (Plain City/Jonathan Alder) scored, and Shadoan’s point-after evened the game at 20 with 6:59 left in regulation time.

The Bishops had a chance to take the lead on their next possession, with Beachy picking up a pair of first downs, the latter coming on a 22-yard burst that spotted the ball on the Kenyon 19-yard line. Ohio Wesleyan was flagged for an illegal block on first down, however, and on second down, Lacanaria was sacked and a holding penalty on the play moved the ball back to the Kenyon 40-yard line and out of field-goal range.

Ohio Wesleyan had the ball first in overtime, and a pair of completions from Lacanaria to junior wide receiver Adrian Bishop (San Diego, Calif./Madison) set up a first down at the Lord 11-yard line. The drive stalled there, however, and Shadoan came on for a 35-yard field goal try, but the snap was high and Shadoan covered the ball.

Kenyon picked up 9 yards on a pair of Rob Meagher runs, but on third-and-1 from the Bishop 16, senior linebacker Brad Dotson (Piqua) dropped Jake Bates for a 2-yard loss, and Kenyon’s Szabi Simo misfired on a 35-yard field goal attempt to send the game to a second overtime.

Bates picked up a first down for Kenyon in the second session, finding Ian Bell for 16 yards on third-and-16 from the Bishop 31, and a pair of Meagher carries for 5 and 9 yards gave the Lords a first down at the Ohio Wesleyan 1-yard line. The Bishop defense stuffed Bates for no gain on first down, and on second down, senior defensive end Cameron Pappa (Gilroy, Calif./Kings Academy) forced and recovered a Sam Appel fumble to end the Kenyon possession.

Beachy carried 3 times for Ohio Wesleyan, and on fourth down, Shadoan came on and converted the game-winning 43-yard field goal.

Kenyon had taken a 7-0 first-quarter lead, getting runs of 10 yards by Bates and 11 yards by Meagher, along with a personal foul call against the Bishops, on the way to a first down at the Ohio Wesleyan 2. On the next play, Bates hit Greg McIntosh for the score with 1:08 left in the period.

Shadoan returned the ensuing kickoff 25 yards to the Bishop 30, and on the first play from scrimmage, Lacanaria hit Williams for a 70-yard touchdown. Shadoan’s point-after tied the game at 7.

Simo connected on field goal attempts of 33 and 24 yards for a 13-7 Kenyon lead midway through the second quarter, but the Bishops responded. Senior nose guard Dominic Wilson (Houston, Texas/Cypress Woods) recovered an Appel fumble at the Kenyon 21-yard line, setting up a 37-yard Shadoan field goal that made it 13-10 with 4:30 left in the half, and after a Kenyon 3-and-out, Lacanaria scampered for 13 yards and later found Bishop for 15 more to set up a 27-yard Shadoan field goal that evened the game at 13 with 1:04 to play in the half.

Meagher and Bates fueled a Kenyon drive that gave the Lords the lead late in the third quarter. Meagher rumbled for 13 yards and a first down before catching an 11-yard pass from Bates for another first down. 3 straight rushes by Meagher and a pass interference penalty on the Bishops moved the ball into the red zone, and Bates found Brian Hunca for 16 yards on fourth-and-15 from the OWU 19, setting up a 3-yard run by Meagher for a 20-13 Kenyon advantage with 1:09 left in the quarter.

Lacanaria completed 18 of 35 passes for 231 yards and a score. Bishop caught a team-high 6 passes for 58 yards, while Williams had 3 receptions for 140 yards. Beachy led Bishop rushers with 49 yards on 12 carries.

Defensive leaders for the Bishops included junior defensive end Gary Brodek (Parma/Valley Forge), who recorded 16 stops, including 3 for loss; Dotson, who finished with 13 tackles, including 2½ for loss; and junior linebacker Keaton Leppla (Millersburg/West Holmes), who had 12 stops, including one for loss.

Bates completed 15 of 28 passes for 160 yards. Hunca caught 7 passes for 79 yards. Meagher led all rushers with 143 yards on 37 carries. Mike Gibbons and Jamal Perkins had 8 tackles apiece for Kenyon.
