For its latest fundraiser, the Women’s City Club of Delaware will host a pub crawl from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14.
Six different pubs/restaurants will participate — the Backstretch, Barley Hopsters, Buns, Solar Saloon, Son of Thurman and Vito’s Wine Bar. Each eatery will have special appetizers for those attending the crawl.
“This is a first-time event,” said City Club spokeswoman Jo Ingles. “Other groups have done pub crawls, and they have been very successful. We thought we’d take a shot at it. Our vendor fair fell through for lack of a venue. We couldn’t do it at the City Club, because we’ve had to close off certain areas due to repairs, and it doesn’t leave us enough space.”
Since 1954, the Women’s City Club has provided affordable housing for women in Delaware. Its three-story home at 135 N. Franklin St. currently houses nine women. It has capacity for 10, but the ceiling caved in at one of the rooms.
“We’ve had to do a lot of work over the past year,” said Ingles. “We had to put in our new heating and cooling system, new electrical work, and put on an entire new roof due to storm damage. We’ve also had construction issues, because once you try to do anything on a 100-year-old home, it’s like opening Pandora’s Box. It has to be up to code, and we want it done right.”
Ingles said the repairs may be completed in January.
The event starts promptly at 4 p.m. at the Backstretch, Ingles said. Gift baskets will be raffled off at 7:30 p.m., and winners must be present.
“We think it will be a fun evening and a great time,” Ingles said. “We really appreciate the six sponsors who are doing this for us. They’ve been very gracious to do this on a Saturday night.”
Tickets cost $20 and can be bought online at wccdelaware.org through today (Nov. 13). Tickets will also be available the day of the event for $25. Drinks are not included.
