The Delaware Hayes swimming and diving teams dropped their season openers against host New Albany Tuesday — the girls lost 120-50 while the boys fell 102-62 — but both had more than a few standout performances to build on.

Junior Brooke Glesenkamp, a returning state qualifier, led the girls. She won the 200-yard freestyle (2:01.06) and 100 breaststroke (1:10.78).

“Dedicated and hard-working, Brooke has devoted the offseason to working in the weight room on strength and conditioning,” Hayes coach Bill Rietz said. “She continues to develop all her strokes, but specializes in sprint relay.”

Junior Kristen Puthoff, who also got a taste of the state meet last season, finished second in the 50 and 500 freestyles (25.89 seconds and 5:40.21, respectively) while freshman Valerie Keller closed second in the 100 freestyle (58.51 seconds).

Hayes’ girls picked up second-place points in the 200 freestyle relay as Keller, Marisa Sulek, Molly Schul and Glesenkamp finished in 1:47.46. They also finished second in the 400 freestyle relay as Hannah Kelly, Hannah Weller, Puthoff and Glesenkamp combined to close in 3:55.43.

Sophomore Ethan Hall picked up a win for the boys, taking top honors in the 500 freestyle (5:52.52).

Hayes’ boys also nabbed a win in the 200 freestyle relay as Junior Craig Klumpp teamed up with Hall and freshmen Matt Hanks and Kael Gannon to finish in 1:44.02.

Runner-up efforts belonged to the 200 medley relay quartet (Adryan Rojas, Klumpp, Remington Curtin and Gannon), which finished in 1:48.40, Curtin in the 200 freestyle (1:59.39) and 100 butterfly (1:00.36), Klumpp in the 200 IM (2:17.18) and 100 breaststroke (1:06.19), Lucas Pape in the 500 freestyle (6:09.74) and Rojas in the 100 backstroke (56.83 seconds).

Hayes returns to action Friday when it hosts Olentangy and Pickerington North at 7 p.m. The meet will be held at the Delaware Community YMCA.

Several hours later, the Pacers will hit the pool to compete in the Columbus Academy Relays Saturday morning at 11:30 a.m.
