Delaware Maurice’s store sponsors food drive

The Maurice’s clothing store at Glenwood Commons is not only helping Eastside Mission Church, but it is also sponsoring a food drive.

“We are giving the church a $200 Visa gift card for them to use at the holidays,” said Maurice’s employee Patty Webb. “We’re going to start a food drive, because they have a food pantry year-round, and they feed families for the holidays.”

Eastside, at 32 Joy Ave., recently had a successful toy drive this holiday season, the fourth they’ve done.

“We had a mountain of toys. We were praying for a thousand, and we got almost 1,300,” said Pastor Donny Akers. “We had a mountain of toys. We took 600 to Nationwide Children’s Hospital, we gave 125 to William Street United Methodist Church to help them with their toy drive. We’re taking some to Salvation Army, the Common Ground Free Store and the Family Promise house. Last year, we got 800 toys.”

Wal-Mart and the local Eagles club were thanked for their help on the toy drive.

Akers said the food drive, with an assist from Maurice’s, will help 40 families this Christmas.

“Every family gets a ham, sweet potatoes, stuffing, rolls, pumpkin pie, vegetables — everything,” Akers said. “We helped 40 families at Thanksgiving. Everybody got a turkey, a complete dinner. We’ve helped 250 families this past year from our food pantries.”

In addition, Akers said Eastside donated 125 winter coats to the homeless shelter in Columbus.

“It’s always nice to be able to give,” said Eric Raus, a church trustee.

“It’s better to give than to receive. That’s Christmas to me,” Akers said.

For every three non-perishable food items donated in a collection box at the store through Jan. 1, Maurice’s will give a customer a coupon for 20 percent off a regular-priced item.

“They’re going to take it over whenever the box gets full,” Webb said. “The last time we did this, they had to come over a couple of times.”

A Duluth, Minnesota-based retail chain store which sells fashions for young women, Maurice’s has an annual “give-thanks” campaign where employees give their money and time to local non-profit organizations.

Maurice’s is at 870 Sunbury Road, Suite 210. For more information, see #givethanks #maurices #store1150 on Instagram.
