Willis students get a guest teacher for a lesson on poetry

Collin Johler, a fifth-grader at Willis Intermediate School, does his best to demonstrate what hate sounds like for visiting author and poet Michael Salinger Wednesday afternoon in Samantha Forster’s class. Salinger and his co-author, Sara Holbrook, spoke to Willis students Wednesday morning about writing, and then spent the afternoon in fifth-grade English classes talking about poetry and helping students improve their writing. Salinger, with Johler and the rest of the class’ help, composed a poem about hate, using students’ descriptions of what hate does and doesn’t do.
