Lenten concert Sunday at Asbury

The Chancel Choir of Asbury United Methodist Church will present a Lenten concert titled “Let Light Shine out of the Darkness” on Sunday, Feb. 28, at 3 p.m. in the church sanctuary.

The choir, organist Sally Casto, soloists from the choir, as well as guest singers and a chamber orchestra, will join forces under the musical direction of Robert Nims to perform J.S. Bach’s Cantata 131, Out of the Depths I Cry to You, O Lord, and excerpts from Michael Tippett’s A Child of our Time.

While the cantata will be performed in its entirety, the Tippett oratorio will use narration by Dr. Kerry Shanklin to present the greater part of the work’s text. The musical portion of the presentation will be confined primarily to five settings of African American spirituals, which Tippett used to express the longing of all oppressed people.

The concert is offered to the public without admission charge. An offering to help defray expenses will be taken.

Asbury United Methodist Church is located at the corner of Franklin Street and Lincoln Avenue. The parking lot at the rear of the church is most easily reached from North Franklin Street. The church is handicapped-accessible from the rear parking lot entrance.
