The Alpha Group of Delaware Inc. received a grant from the Delaware County Foundation’s Ron Sabatino Family Fund to provide a new handicap-accessible van.
The van is equipped with a side wheelchair ramp and transports up to four passengers.
In addition to the grant for the new vehicle, funds were also received for client recognition. Clients are presented with a gift card for their birthdays, along with an extra gift amount to participate in outings.
Grants from the Delaware County Foundation to the Alpha Group totaled $47,000, one of the largest awards this past year, foundation officials said.
The combined grants will enable clients of the Alpha Group to enjoy and participate in cultural and community experiences according to Alpha Group officials. Examples of cultural experiences include visits to the Ohio Historical Society, American Whistle Corp. and the Aladdin Shrine Circus. It will also enable them to participate in extra community-based activities like bowling, swimming and movie-going.
Alpha has been the largest provider of service to individuals with disabilities in Delaware for more than 45 years, group officials say. The programs and services continue to expand throughout Delaware and surrounding counties. The Alpha Group ensures that individuals will reach their full potential, they say, by providing these services: community employment, integrated adult day programs, vocational training and transportation.
“We are grateful to the Ron Sabatino family and the Delaware County Foundation for the impact this donation will make for our clients to have experiences they may never have had a chance to explore,” said Liz Owens, CEO of the Alpha Group. The transportation program provides an alternative transportation source for individuals with disabilities who need a ride to their community job, or seniors needing a ride to doctor appointments.
“We are pleased to connect the Delaware County Foundation’s donor dollars with the needs of the community,” said Marlene Casini, foundation president. “We understand and greatly appreciate the work of all those at the Alpha Group to provide their clients with educational, employment and entertainment options in the community.”
The Delaware County Foundation has awarded $8.4 million in grants and scholarships since it began supporting the community in 1997. Charitable funds are created at the foundation by individuals and business looking to give back to the community.
