The Delaware Hayes softball team managed just two runs on four hits, but solid pitching and defense made sure it was enough in a key 2-1 OCC-Capital Division win over visiting New Albany Monday in Delaware.
The Pacers (17-0) scored a run in the second before taking a 2-0 lead with another in the fourth.
The Eagles sliced their deficit in half with a run in the sixth, but couldn’t get any closer.
Caylin Morstadt, who keyed the offense with a solo homer, had two of Hayes’ four hits while Mallory Stonebraker and Audrey Hannahs had the others.
Madi Huck earned the win in the circle, allowing a run on six hits while striking out nine in seven solid innings of work.
Olentangy 14, Franklin Heights 2, 5 inn.
The Braves (8-7) set the tone with 10 first-inning runs on the way to a lopsided OCC-Capital Division win over the host Falcons Monday in Columbus.
Sydney Wagner, Kristen Bartel, Ashley Post and Sophie Low led Olentangy’s 17-hit attack with three knocks apiece. Bartel scored three runs while knocking in a pair, Post had two runs and two RBI, Wagner finished with two runs and an RBI and Low added two RBI and a run scored.
Joce McBurney-Buell also had a nice game, finishing with a homer and three RBI in the win.
Logan Sutton picked up the win in the circle, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out two and walking one in five innings of action.
Delaware Christian 10, Tree of Life 7
In what was a back-and-fourth game throughout, a three-run eighth put the Eagles on top for good Monday in Columbus.
Emily Parrish led DCS (6-3) in the extra-inning win, finishing with four hits, three runs scored and an RBI. Madie Morgan also had a nice night, closing with two hits, four knocked in and a run scored.
Also: Big Walnut 12, Worthington Kilbourne 1; Mount Vernon 6, Orange 3; Marysville 11, Liberty 0.
BASEBALL
Hayes snapped an eight-game losing streak in style Monday, drilling visiting Mount Vernon 11-3.
The game was nip and tuck … until the fifth. With the game tied 2-2, the Pacers (4-13) struck for seven runs to break things open.
Sam Midura and Mason W. Davis had multi-hit games for Hayes with two apiece. Tyler Brown and Ben Yoakum were also clutch at the plate, each finishing with three RBI in the win.
Brown picked up a complete-game win on the mound, allowing three runs on five hits while striking out three and walking one.
Olentangy 7, Worthington Kilbourne 2
The Braves crept a little closer to a league title Monday, improving to 10-0 in OCC play with a convincing win over the visiting Wolves.
With just four league games remaining, Olentangy (13-6) is alone in first by three games.
The Braves, up 2-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth, struck for three runs to break things open. They added two more in the sixth to provide a little insurance.
Nate Monastra led the way at the plate, finishing 3-for-4 with two runs scored an one knocked in. Cameron Kaiser also had a big game, closing with two hits and three RBI, while Collin Hoffmann had a hit, two RBI and a run scored.
Berto Carselle picked up the win on the mound, scattering nine hits while striking out three and walking one in the complete-game win.
Liberty 15, Hilliard Davidson 5
Mitchell Okuley and Spencer Yankle had three hits apiece while Chase Gresock drove in a trio of runs to lead the Patriots (16-3) to a lopsided five-inning win over visiting Hilliard Davidson Monday in Powell.
Gresock also scored three runs in the win, as did Jordan Seich.
Mitch Milheim earned the win on the mound, allowing five runs on six hits while striking out two and walking three in four innings of work.
Big Walnut 6, New Albany 4
The Golden Eagles scored four runs in the fourth and two in the seventh to post a solid OCC-Capital win Monday in New Albany.
Noah Sprowls and Austin Becker finished with two hits and two RBI apiece. Nick Moser also had a pair of hits in the win.
Henry von Hollen got the win on the mound.
Delaware Christian 4, Tree of Life 2
Ryan Manny was the man for DCS Monday in Columbus, finishing with three hits at the plate and a complete-game win on the mound.
Manny had an RBI and two runs scored to go with his hits. Pitching wise, he held host Tree of Life to just two runs on six hits while striking out five and walking just one.
Riley Michalak also had a hit and an RBI for the Eagles.
