Master gardeners offering $2,000 scholarship

The Delaware County Master Gardeners volunteers have announced a $2,000 scholarship for a Delaware County student who is pursuing an education in botany, horticulture, agriculture, food sciences or a related field.

Eligible applicants must be Delaware County residents enrolled in a post-secondary program in botany, horticulture, agriculture, food sciences or a related field in the United States.

Applications must be submitted by May 31. The scholarship will be awarded no later than June 30.

The 2016 scholarship is honoring the contributions to gardening education in Delaware County of Nora Hiland. She joined the Delaware County Master Gardener Association in 2009 and since then taught many classes on topics, such as invasive species, pruning and rain gardens.

Hiland led an initiative to start a kids garden and each year leads fun teaching sessions to interest children in gardening.

She holds a degree in ornamental horticulture and is a former director of education at the Franklin Park Conservatory and is a current member of the Ohio Invasive Plants Council.
