A woman was killed Tuesday morning in a traffic accident at the intersection of U.S. 23 and Cheshire Road.
Troopers from the Delaware post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol reported that at about 9:55 a.m. a 2004 Lincoln LS was moving south on U.S. 23 and the driver attempted to make a left turn onto Cheshire. Troopers said she failed to yield to a 2011 Peterbilt flat-bed tow truck that was traveling north on U.S. 23 and the truck struck the Lincoln on the passenger side.
Both vehicles then went off the northeast corner of the intersection and struck a pine tree before coming to rest.
Troopers report the driver of the Lincoln sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Her name had not been released late Tuesday afternoon by troopers.
The driver of the truck, 52-year-old Lexington resident Carl R. Banfield, was injured but his injuries were not life-threatening, troopers said. He was transported to Riverside Methodist Hospital by Liberty Township emergency medical services.
Troopers report drugs or alcohol are not suspected to be connected to the crash.
Troopers had not notified next of kin Tuesday afternoon.
The crash closed the northbound lane of U.S. 23 and brought southbound traffic down to one lane. Deputies from the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office assisted troopers by directing southbound traffic.
Because of the closure, northbound traffic was rerouted onto Glenn Parkway and Berlin Station Road, causing significant traffic backup at the roundabout on Cheshire Road and several all-way stop intersections.
Troopers reported that the scene had been cleared and traffic was restored to normal conditions around 1 p.m.
Troopers said they were also assisted by Delaware firefighters, Delaware Emergency Medical Services and the Delaware County Emergency Management Agency.
The driver of the Lincoln was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, troopers said.
This is the second fatal crash in Delaware County in less than a week. David D. Poplar, 47, of Dublin, was killed Saturday when his vehicle crashed into a concrete bridge structure on U.S. 23 in Troy Township.
