FFA ag-issues team second in state

Big Walnut/DACC FFA is on a roll. During the recent FFA state convention, the BW/DACC FFA agricultural-issues forum CDE team placed second in Ohio.

The team members are Alex Brown, Ali Carter, Noah Hale, Ben Kessler, Kylie Paykoff and Evan Thiergartner.

“Gabby Adair was on the team last year and helped me coach them this year, along with other members of the state-winning team from last year — Meghann Hale, Troy Herrel, and Lex Marvin,” said Big Walnut ag science teacher and FFA adviser Jeff Stimmell. “For the event, the students selected an issue related to the industry of agriculture, prepared a portfolio documenting local awareness raised about the issue, performed a 15-minute skit, and answered seven minutes of questions.”

Stimmell said the issue the students chose was zoning in eastern Delaware County. Their skit portrayed one of the local forums about the impact of residential and commercial growth put on by the Big Walnut School District.

“This second-place finish put them just 1.5 points shy of winning,” Stimmell said. “We are super proud of them and all of their work. Three team members are seniors and, while their leadership will be missed, we are excited for the great things the other three will do moving forward.”

Stimmell said three students – Buckeye Valley graduate Curtis Harsh, Buckeye Valley sophomore Sarah Lehner and Big Walnut senior Evan Thiergartner — placed first in the state with their proficiency awards.

Harsh, Lehner and Thiergartner competed in beef production entrepreneurship, dairy production entrepreneurship and equine science entrepreneurship respectively. Their applications will be forwarded for national FFA evaluation.

Big Walnut senior Alex Brown placed third in the state in the area of outdoor recreation.

“These award areas recognize achievement in supervised agricultural experience programs for projects the students do outside of regular school time, and consist of an application and interview process,” Stimmell said. “All four students won the district to advance to the state finals. (Buckeye Valley ag science teacher) Alex Zimmer and I are very proud of these hard-working students.”
