Hayes students shoots for the stars

A Delaware Hayes High School senior was recently selected as a “Student of Integrity” by the Better Business Bureau and was awarded a scholarship.

Grace Floring said she was nominated for the scholarship by one of the school’s guidance counselors, Leigh Conant, and said she wrote an essay when she applied for the scholarship in February.

According to the Better Business Bureau, the Students of Integrity Scholarship award is “an annual future leaders program designed to increase marketplace trust by encouraging and recognizing the ethical and character development of our future leaders and employees.”

Floring said she wrote her essay about learning and striving to achieve excellence to be the best version of yourself.

“I really love academics,” Floring said. “I strive to be the best I can be. It’s really important to learn as much as you can and pass that along.”

In addition to being a good student, academically, Floring is also the President of the National Honor Society and a Girl Scout Ambassador, among many other groups and activities.

Floring said she had kind of forgotten about the scholarship when she was contacted over the summer and told she had one.

“They told me I’d find out this school year,” Floring said. “I felt very accomplished.”

Floring was honored at a luncheon at The Ohio State University and will receive a $1,000 scholarship as part of the award. She was one of 10 students from 70 central Ohio schools to win the award.

Floring said she plans major in aerospace engineering next fall at either The University of Cincinnati or Case Western Reserve.

“It’s a really important field,” Floring said. “I really love NASA and want to work there.”

Floring said NASA wants to go to Mars in the next decade and hopes that she will be part of NASA when they do.

“It’s an internal thing for me,” Floring said. “I want to do well and I love learning.”
