The Alpha Group’s transportation program growing

The need is real.

“To say the Alpha Members are excited to take field trips, as part of the Alpha Integrated Day Program, would be an understatement,” said Liz Owens, Alpha CEO.

“Thanks to dollars generated from our fundraising efforts we were able to purchase one new handicap accessible vehicle and two sedans to add to our existing fleet.”

These funds along with the transportation grants awarded by MORPC (Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission) will serve older adults and individuals with developmental disabilities in Delaware and surrounding counties.

In March, with the support of sponsors and Friends of Alpha volunteers the group was able to raise nearly $11,000 from the Casino Night event. These funds directly impact programs and services provided by The Alpha Group.

“This division relies on grants, donations, and third party organizations to provide the fees for service. It takes fundraising dollars to fill in the gap to provide maintenance, fuel and pay for additional drivers,” Owens said.

In addition, as common as funding challenges are to growing programs, staffing needs are bound to follow.

“The need for more part-time drivers is and will be for the foreseeable future a great need at Alpha,” said Tom Patterson, transportation manager.

“We must find ways to help individuals with developmental disabilities and support their ability to be active participants in their community.”
