Boy Scout Troop 61 is becoming known in the Northwest neighborhood for serving their second Wednesday Italian dinner during the months of September through May.
The dinner, now in its sixth year, started out small with the intent being the Scouts to fellowship over a meal with the congregation of Asbury, neighbors and scout families. The meal is served under the direction of John Lindeboom (former Scoutmaster) the Food & Beverage Director, Executive Chef at Willow Brook Christian Village.
This Wednesday, May 10 from 5-7 p.m. will be a special evening. The Scout Troop recently lost one of its leaders unexpectedly on April 13. Matthew J. Rainey, 45 was an Eagle Scout and “was a wonderful leader with compassion and determination,” a news release states.
Rainey leaves behind his wife Maryann, and children Sara, Amanda and Zachary.
The proceeds from Wednesday’s dinner will go toward a memorial bench in his honor to be placed at Camp Lazarus on U.S. 23.
There is no set cost, but a donation is welcome. The meal includes all you-can-eat pasta, lasagna, salad, bread, beverages and homemade desserts. Over the years many meals have been served to those who normally would not have dinner.
“Their motto is everyone is welcome and each Wednesday there are six Scouts ready to serve those who attend. The parents are busy in the kitchen and it has been a wonderful relationship for everyone involved and those that are served.”
Boy Scout Troop #61 is an active troop and has over 30 Scouts currently participating along with graduation of eight Eagle Scouts in the past six years.
