Ostrander branch library plans Scioto Heritage Fest

Scioto Township, near the Village of Ostrander, has a rich history that the Delaware County District Library Ostrander Branch hopes to give new life during the Scioto Heritage Fest.

The festival is planned for Saturday, Sept. 30 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

This special day will give families and attendees of all ages a special look at pioneer times in Scioto Township including craft demonstrations, games, music, food and, of course, trains.

“This look into the past is truly a collaboration of neighbors as almost everyone involved from the musicians to the creator of the ‘Jerk’ train engine is from the Scioto Township area,” said Ostrander Branch Library Manager Harla Lawson. “We have tried to have something of interest for everyone in the family to enjoy.”

Local author Karen Meyer will tell stories and make a pioneer presentation at noon and 2 p.m. Her books include the Mysteries of the Ohio Frontier and Settlers of the Ohio Frontier series.

A toy train display will be on display courtesy of the Toy Train Operating Society: Buckeye Division. A train engine from Ostrander’s past, known as the “Jerk,” will also make a special appearance.

A look at the past would not be complete without craft demonstrations like spinning and quilting. Dorie Smith of the Central Ohio Weavers Guild and quilters from the Ostrander’s Needlers Quilting Group will conduct demonstrations throughout the day.

Weather permitting, attendees can sit around a campfire and feel the flavor of fall or enjoy a self-guided walking history tour of Ostrander’s three churches. If sunny skies are not in store, a map will be provided for a Scioto Township road tour. The map will be available at the Ostrander Branch Library and will drive tour takers past some significant historic places in the township.
