GALENA — Harlem Township Heritage Day will take place Saturday from noon to 6 p.m. at the Community Park, 3858 state Route 605 S.
In years past, the front of the park has been lined with vintage tractors and cars. There will also be a farmers market from noon to 6 p.m., craft vendors and local exhibitors, kids rides and games.
From noon to 1:30 p.m., there will be a seniors luncheon with musical accompaniment by Chris Petee from Mount Vernon. The group Puddy Light will perform from 2 to 4 p.m., and the nearby Curtain Players troupe will perform from 4 to around 6 p.m. to close the event.
Several food vendors will be in attendance.
The event is being presented by Harlem Township Heritage, Inc., a nonprofit organization “devoted to bettering our township and community through annual activities,” said the township’s website.
Meanwhile, Harlem is addressing “Intel and Columbus at our doorstep” with a meeting next week.
“The Harlem Township Strategic Planning Committee will be holding a public meeting to update residents on development activities taking place in and around Harlem Township,” said the township website. “This meeting will take place on August 23, 2022, at 6:30 p.m. at the Harlem Road United Methodist Church, 5520 Harlem Road, Galena.”
Harlem also plans to install a new community sign.
“Pardon our mess while we prepare for our new community sign,” said the township website. “Update on new sign install date… Due to extended repairs being made to the sign foundation and base we do not have an install date for the new sign. Please stay tuned for further updates as we get them.”
This fall, expect to see changes at the intersection of state Route 605 and Center Village Road with the addition of a new four-way stop sign.
In a letter to the Harlem Township Board of Trustees, the Ohio Department of Transportation recognized there were an increase in angle crashes, known as “T-bone crashes,” in the last three years at this intersection. However, the volume of traffic wasn’t high enough to warrant a signal. That doesn’t mean nothing will be done, though.
“ODOT will be installing stop signs on State Route 605,” the letter said. “They will be implemented on both the northbound and southbound approaches of this intersection. This will promote lower speeds through the village and a safer intersection for all drivers.”
To prepare motorists for the change, there will be “Stop Ahead” warning signs with red flags on either side of the road on both approaches, and temporary yellow new plaques on top of the stop signs, ODOT said.
