No. 5 Ohio State rolls to 35-7 win over Youngstown State

COLUMBUS — Back in Ohio Stadium for the first time this season, No. 5 Ohio State cruised to a 35-7 win against overmatched FCS opponent Youngstown State on Saturday afternoon.

Kyle McCord threw three first-half touchdowns, including a pair to Marvin Harrison Jr., in a sharp performance that was much more in line with what Ohio State has come to expect from its passing game than last week’s effort.

TreVeyon Henderson scored a pair of rushing touchdowns, his first of the season, for an Ohio State offense that totaled 482 yards on the day despite having the ball for only 26 minutes.

Devin Brown added 101 passing yards and nine rushing yards in relief of McCord.

Youngstown State running back Tyshon King carried 12 times for 66 yards, but the offense managed just 99 yards total on the ground as part of a paltry 234-yard overall performance.

For the second time in as many weeks, Ohio State found the end zone on its first offensive possession of the game. After alluding to the possibility earlier in the week, head coach Ryan Day elected to take the ball after Ohio State won the coin toss, looking to establish a rhythm immediately.

His offense ensured the decision paid off nicely as McCord found a wide-open Harrison Jr. for a 71-yard touchdown on just the third play of the drive. The catch was the longest of Harrison’s college career.

Ohio State owned a 7-0 lead less than two minutes into the game, but a sleepy defensive start gave way to a quick answer from Youngstown State on the ensuing drive. Mitch Davidson’s 1-yard touchdown run capped off an 11-play drive, leveling the score midway through the opening quarter.

McCord’s second touchdown pass to Harrison late in the first quarter, this time from 39 yards out, pushed Ohio State back ahead for good. Harrison finished his monster day with seven catches for 160 yards and two scores.

Henderson’s 13-yard rushing touchdown and McCord’s 28-yard toss to Emeka Egbuka increased the lead to 28-7 later in the second quarter as Ohio State began to pull away heading into halftime.

Brown played just one series in the first half, completing two of his six completions for 21 yards and adding 13 rushing yards, but his opportunities would increase in the second half.

McCord began the second half as the starter, but following a quick punt on Ohio State’s first possession of the quarter, his day was finished as Brown took over for the final two drives of the game.

Following the game, Day was complimentary of McCord’s play, noting he could sense more poise from his junior quarterback heading into his second start. As for Brown, Day said the sophomore was “a little anxious” once he got onto the field but then settled in fairly well.

Day was not willing to commit to McCord just yet, however, saying he would need to evaluate the film before deciding how he will handle the position leading into Ohio State’s matchup with Western Kentucky next week.
